Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and the Dominican Chess Federation (FDA), announced the winners of the First International Classic “Pedro Henríquez Ureña In Memoriam”, the most important held in the country.
The tournament began on Friday, September 16, and was attended by 15 Dominican players and 5 foreign players with Grand Master titles, awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The winners were:
Cuban GM Yasser Quezada won unbeaten 1st. Chess Classic “Pedro Henríquez Ureña In Memoriam”. He scored 8 points out of 9 possible by winning seven games and starting the other two.
The second position was given to the American GM Alejandro Ramírez with 6.5, and the third to also GM, the Argentine Fernando Peralta with 6. The other two GMs, León Hoyos of Mexico and José Cuenca, shared the fourth position with 5.5.
Dominican international (MI) maestro Josué Araujo finished in fifth place with 5 points. Fourteen other Dominican chess players participated in the tournament.
The closing ceremony was held on Thursday, September 22 at 5:00 pm in the Horacio Álvarez Saviñón Auditorium of the university, the venue of the tournament and was led by the president of the Chess Federation (FDA), Pedro Domínguez Brito and Vice-Chancellor of Research, Linkage and Internationalization Projects, Josefina Pepín Ubrí, who attended on behalf of the chancellor, Architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón.
The tournament was led by Erick Hernández, from El Salvador, who is president of zone 2.3 of FIDE America, assisted by Leonardo Estévez, Dominican international referee and the coordination oversaw the graduate Braulio Ramírez, secretary general of the Chess Federation.
